Notes About This Product

The "Maximum Wind from Significant Wind Levels" is the highest wind reported in the "Significant Wind Levels" section of the dropsonde. It could occur at any level, including the surface, though winds at the surface will almost always be lower, sometimes significantly lower. The "Maximum Wind from Significant Wind Levels" is the peak wind at a particular level since dropsondes only record momentary slices of data at each level as the sonde falls through the atmosphere. This value will often be higher, sometimes very significantly, than the flight level winds recorded by the reconnaissance aircraft, and released in high density observations (HDOB), depending on the vertical wind profile of the atmosphere between the surface and the aircraft. Additionally, these winds are not 1 minute sustained. The "Highest Surface Wind" is a peak wind near the surface and is also not 1 minute sustained. The surface wind will be unavailable if the sonde was unable to measure the wind near the surface. (such as a technical failure) Extrapolated surface pressures that are noted as such in the dropsonde report are noted above. The times above reflect the launch time of the last dropsonde of the mission, not the time of any of the significant observations noted in other columns. The pressure given is the lowest and the winds the highest (as described previously) in that particular mission among the observations our site downloaded and processed. If some observations were not processed on our site then these values may not contain the most notable values.
