The 2006 HurricaneCity gathering in Fort Walton Beach and the trip to the Katrina zone was great from beginning to end. A special thanks goes out to Nancy AKA "weathergirl" on the
and her sister Sue Cox as well as the Emerald Isle condos for allowing this meeting. As would be expected, many could not attend the gathering, but we had a good crowd and everyone had a good time. You may see a brief freeze of the frame or slight lag time between audio & video as these were re encoded in 2016. Several people departed before being interviewed in 2006, but I did manage to do a handfull before the end of the meeting. During the interview with Hanna I had technical problems, but she came along on the trip west & contributed in the videos. The fearless foursome of Mark "mdweather" from
, Nancy "weathergirl", Hanna "hanna" & Jim "jimw" viewed all the damaged areas. As would be expected, the camera cannot capture the magnitude of this disaster. While viewing the damage, please keep in mind that buildings may have been excavated & items may have been moved by other means than Katrina. A special thanks goes out to "racegirl" for the tour of Biloxi and "Bateauxdriver" for the tour of SE Louisiana as well as all others that took time to explain what happened. Please enjoy the videos.
A video of the 2006 HurricaneCity.com gathering in Ft Walton Beach, Fla on Okaloosa Island. The picture on the left is Nancy "weathergirl" who arranged the party and did a great job with decorations including this great banner. In this video you will see most of the people that showed up including "prettywitty" who had to leave early and others arrived after this video was taken. The food was great, especially the rum soaked pineapple, with plenty of shrimp, burgers and wings. Fred on Long Island sent down all of the newspaper articles in the video, truly an amazing collection. Some of us sat down and watched Mark Sudduth's 2005 season video while snacking & drinking New Castle beer thanks to Gianmarc. Overall it seemed everyone had a great time! (2min 35sec)
Ron "Bagdad Ron" from the Bagdad area of Pensacola, Florida had to leave early. A few parting words from Ron who is still helping in the recovery effort from Ivan. (20sec)
Gianmarc sits down with Jimw to discuss the threat to St Petersburg, Florida. (5min 11sec)
Jeff AKA "lizardman" sits down with Jim to talk about his projects online & the threat to his home town of Tallahassee, Florida. (3:34)
The blooper video where Jim cant remember who he is talking to. Mark AKA "mdweather" or "john ward" came down from Batavia, Illinois to attend the gathering & travel west to see the Katrina damage. John Ward is a completely different person that never attended the gathering. (1min 50sec)
Nancy "weathergirl" hosted this event and did a great job. Nancy and Jim talk about the threat to Fort Walton Beach, Florida where the gathering took place. This area is a sitting duck and Nancy says even in brushes this area has flooded. (3min 33sec)
Robert "RcRebel" has to leave and gets a brief interview on the way out. Robert shared some nice photos taken from Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and fears Mobile may be hit next. (13sec)
Rick who visits HurricaneCity while tracking hurricanes, talks about the threat to the Florida panhandle where he lives and about the video he has taken. That darn John Ward pops up again at the end. (1min 45sec)
Nancy, Hanna, Mark & Jimw head west to the Katrina zone. After driving through Pascagoula, MS we decided to hit Highway 90 along the coast to get to Biloxi. We ran into the collapsed bridge that connects Ocean Springs with Biloxi. What a mess! (2min 19sec)
Racegirl gives us a tour of the famous Mary Mahoney's restaurant in Biloxi where she works describing what happened here during Katrina. (4min 54sec)
Deb "Racegirl" shows us what happened to her home in Biloxi over a mile inland. All furniture in the home is destroyed, but the tracking chart remained on the wall showing Katrina's last position before evacuating. Racegirl has been through a lot and still remains upbeat as she says she would like to remain in the area. (6min 48sec) Also in this video racegirl mentions a huge wave on top of the surge that remains disputed but
this may prove it to be true.
Mark, Hanna, Nancy & Jim take a look at the Oceanarium damage in Gulfport, MS. We run into what we think is Mark Sudduth's HurricaneTrack.com missing video box & relive what happened during Katrina. We could have had a lot of fun with that black box placing it in hidden areas and keep finding it, but we decided not to. (2min 59sec)
You won't believe how high the surge mark is in this video from Pass Christian. You will see a mix of video from last years trip to this area describing what Camille did here. You will see the Winn Dixie that was built on the land where the Richelieu Apartments once stood & now that is all gone from Katrina. The pole that measured Camille's surge snapped in half during Katrina and again Nancy & Jim discuss / video miles of missing buildings and a Graffiti memorial. (11min 57sec)
View of downtown New Orleans during morning rush hour, or lack thereof, from the Holiday Inn. We all visit HurricaneCity but were dissapointed when we found no hurricane decorations inside. Maybe we need to take this place over. We take a tour of the Ninth Ward & the industrial canal levee being rebuilt. A view of workers repairing the roof at the Superdome. A special thanks to Bateauxdriver for the tour. (6min 59sec)
We find a family that evacuated near Shell Beach in St Bernard Parish and they had some interesting info on what happened here with tremendous surge flooding, rescues & deaths. Another cemetary with a crypt across the street. (3min 41sec)
Bateauxdriver guides us deep down into Plaquemines Parish. Incredible surge took boats from Breton sound & flung them into the Mississippi river. Jim, Hanna and Nancy cross MS river via auto ferry & head further south. Ever wonder what the south end of the Plaquemines looks like? (8min 10sec)
On Dauphin Island, Alabama, on the way back home, we find many homes gone compared to post Ivan. Even the asphalt road is gone in several places. (1min 44sec)
