Best Tracks
The entire track of a storm with colored lines representing wind speeds. Best track lines are based solely on wind speed, not development type, since some older storms do not have any development type noting what positions are tropical, subtropical, and no longer tropical.

- Storm or higher - 34 kt or higher (39 mph or higher)
- Category 1 Hurricane or higher - 64 kt or higher (74 mph or higher)
- Category 2 Hurricane or higher - 83 kt or higher (96 mph or higher)
- Category 3 Hurricane or higher - 96 kt or higher (111 mph or higher)
- Category 4 Hurricane or higher - 113 kt or higher (130 mph or higher)
- Category 5 Hurricane or higher - 137 kt or higher (157 mph or higher)

The location where a storm became a hurricane or major hurricane.
- Hurricane - 64 kt (74 mph)
- Major Hurricane - 96 kt (111 mph)
Best Tracks for a Certain Category Only
Only the category of the category file you are looking at is shown. The entire track of a storm is not shown. This is useful to determine, for example, where a certain type of hurricane has previously gone.
- Depression - Less than 34 kt (Less than 39 mph)
- Storm - 34-63 kt (39-73 mph)
- Category 1 Hurricane - 64-82 kt (74-95 mph)
- Category 2 Hurricane - 83-95 kt (96-110 mph)
- Category 3 Hurricane - 96-112 kt (111-129 mph)
- Category 4 Hurricane - 113-136 kt (130-156 mph)
- Category 5 Hurricane - 137 kt or higher (157 mph or higher)
